Narrating Events with Time Connectors
To tell a story in Portuguese, you connect past events using time connectors. This makes your narrative flow naturally.
Building a story step by step
- Primeiro (first) — starts the story
- Depois / A seguir (then / next) — moves to the next event
- De repente (suddenly) — adds surprise or drama
- Finalmente / No fim (finally / in the end) — concludes
Example: "Primeiro, fui ao supermercado. Depois, cozinhei o jantar. De repente, o telefone tocou. Finalmente, sentei-me para comer."
Useful patterns
- Enquanto + imperfeito describes simultaneous actions: "Enquanto eu cozinhava, ele lia o jornal."
- Antes de + infinitivo: "Antes de sair, tomei o pequeno-almoço."
Use the pretérito perfeito for completed events in the story and the imperfeito for background descriptions.

Enquanto comi, ele chegou.Enquanto comia, ele chegou.Use imperfeito (comia) for the ongoing background action with enquanto
Antes sair, tomei café.Antes de sair, tomei café.Antes requires de before an infinitive: antes de + infinitivo
Final, fui para casa.Finalmente, fui para casa.Use the adverb finalmente, not the adjective final
