Technology Problems – Describing Problems with Cases
When reporting tech problems in Polish, different structures require different cases.
Describing what is broken:
- Coś nie działa. (Something is not working. – Nominative)
- Komputer się zawiesił. (The computer froze. – Nominative + reflexive)
- Ekran jest uszkodzony. (The screen is damaged. – Nominative)
Reporting to someone (Dative):
- Zgłosiłem(-am) problem serwisowi. (I reported the problem to the service – Dative: serwisowi)
- Powiedziałem(-am) technikowi o usterce. (I told the technician about the malfunction – Dative: technikowi)
Describing what you need (Genitive after potrzebować):
- Potrzebuję nowego hasła. (I need a new password – Genitive)
- Potrzebuję pomocy technicznej. (I need technical help – Genitive)
Describing the cause (z powodu + Genitive):
- System padł z powodu wirusa. (The system crashed because of a virus.)

- Straciłem(-am) wszystkie dane.I lost all my data.
- Proszę zrestartować urządzenie.Please restart the device.
- Potrzebuję pomocy technicznej.I need technical support.

Типичные ошибки
Mój komputer zawiesił się sam.Mój komputer się zawiesił.The reflexive się belongs close to the verb. 'Zawiesił się' is the correct placement; 'zawiesił się sam' would mean the computer froze by itself (with 'sam' meaning alone/by itself, which changes the meaning).
Potrzebuję pomoc techniczna.Potrzebuję pomocy technicznej.Potrzebować takes Genitive: pomoc → pomocy. The adjective must also be Genitive: techniczna → technicznej.
Zgłosiłem problem do serwis.Zgłosiłem problem serwisowi.Zgłaszać (to report to) takes Dative for the recipient: serwis → serwisowi. Do not use 'do' + Accusative here.
