Performative Utterances
The philosopher J.L. Austin demonstrated that some utterances do not merely describe reality — they create it. When an Italian mayor says "Vi dichiaro marito e moglie," the words themselves perform the action of marrying. These performative utterances require specific social conditions (authority, context, witnesses) to succeed. Italian is rich in performatives: "Prometto," "Mi scuso," "Ti battezzo" all accomplish actions through speech alone.
Speech Act Theory
Building on Austin, John Searle classified speech acts into five categories: assertives (stating facts), directives (making requests), commissives (making promises), expressives (conveying emotions), and declarations (changing institutional reality). In Italian, the same sentence can function as different speech acts depending on intonation and context — "Fa freddo qui" can be an assertion or an indirect request to close the window.
Rhetorical Framing
Language shapes perception through framing — the choice of words that highlights certain aspects while obscuring others. Italian political discourse uses euphemisms ("esuberi" instead of "licenziamenti") to soften harsh realities and dysphemisms to amplify negative impressions. Understanding framing is essential for critical analysis of media, advertising, and political communication in Italian.

Типичные ошибки
Tutte le frasi sono performative.Solo alcune frasi in contesti specifici sono performative. Not all utterances are performative. A performative utterance must meet felicity conditions (authority, context, convention) to actually accomplish an action.
L'eufemismo e il disfemismo sono la stessa cosa.L'eufemismo addolcisce, il disfemismo inasprisce l'espressione.Euphemism softens or disguises a harsh reality, while dysphemism intentionally makes it sound harsher. They are opposite rhetorical strategies.
La propaganda usa solo bugie esplicite.La propaganda usa soprattutto l'inquadramento e la connotazione.Propaganda works primarily through framing and connotation rather than outright lies. The choice of words and emphasis shapes perception without necessarily being factually false.
Un atto linguistico ha sempre un solo significato.Un atto linguistico può avere significati diretti e indiretti.Speech acts often carry indirect meanings. Saying Fa freddo qui can simultaneously state a fact and indirectly request someone to close a window.
I tabù linguistici sono universali e identici.I tabù linguistici variano tra culture e epoche.Linguistic taboos are culturally specific and change over time. What is taboo in one Italian social context may be perfectly acceptable in another.
