The conditional in negotiations (2nd-type hypothetical)

In Italian, the 2nd-type hypothetical period is used to express unreal or hypothetical conditions. It is very common in negotiations for making polite proposals.

Structure

  • Conditional clause: Se + imperfect subjunctive
  • Main clause: present conditional

Negotiation examples

  • Se vi offrissimo uno sconto del 10%, accettereste?

→ If we offered you a 10% discount, would you accept?

  • Se riduceste il prezzo, firmeremmo oggi.

→ If you reduced the price, we would sign today.

  • Se aumentassero i tempi di consegna, potremmo abbassare il costo.

→ If delivery times increased, we could lower the cost.

Key verbs in the imperfect subjunctive

  • offrire → offrissimo / offriste
  • ridurre → riduceste / riducessimo
  • aumentare → aumentassero / aumentaste

Use in negotiations

These structures allow you to make proposals without formally committing, test the other party's limits, and maintain room for manoeuvre.

Выражения

Типичные ошибки

  • Se riducete il prezzo, firmiamo oggi.
Se riduceste il prezzo, firmeremmo oggi.

The 2nd-type conditional requires the imperfect subjunctive (*riduceste*) + conditional (*firmeremmo*), not the present indicative.

  • Noi siamo pronto a negoziare.
    Siamo disposti a negoziare.

*Pronto* can work but *disposti* is more idiomatic in a business negotiation context.

  • Non accettiamo la vostra offerta.
    Non possiamo accettare queste condizioni.

Polite refusal in business prefers *non possiamo accettare* rather than a direct rejection.

  • Se offrissimo X, accettate?
    Se offrissimo X, accettereste?

The main clause must be in the conditional (*accettereste*), not the indicative (*accettate*).

  • Se accetterete, firmiamo subito
    Se accettaste, firmeremmo subito

For a hypothesis, use imperfect subjunctive + conditional (periodo ipotetico II)

  • La nostra offerta è di 1000 euros
La nostra offerta è di 1000 euro

Euro is invariable in Italian: 1000 euro, not euros
