Infinitive of purpose and modal verbs

1. Per + infinitive → to express the purpose of an action

"Ho bisogno di un curriculum per candidarmi." (I need a CV to apply.)
"Studio italiano per lavorare in Italia." (I study Italian to work in Italy.)
"Devo preparare una lettera per presentarmi." (I need to prepare a letter to introduce myself.)

2. Modal verbs: dovere, potere, volere

These three verbs are followed by the infinitive:

dovere (must/have to) : devo, devi, deve, dobbiamo, dovete, devono
potere (can/be able to) : posso, puoi, può, possiamo, potete, possono
volere (to want) : voglio, vuoi, vuole, vogliamo, volete, vogliono

Examples in a work context

"Devo aggiornare il mio curriculum." (I have to update my CV.)
"Posso mandare il curriculum via email?" (Can I send the CV by email?)
"Voglio trovare un lavoro interessante." (I want to find an interesting job.)

Avere bisogno di + infinitive

To express a need:

"Ho bisogno di trovare un lavoro." (I need to find a job.)
"Hai bisogno di aiuto per scrivere il curriculum?" (Do you need help writing the CV?)

Provare a + infinitive

To express an attempt:

"Ho provato a cercare su LinkedIn." (I tried looking on LinkedIn.)
"Prova a chiamare direttamente l'azienda." (Try calling the company directly.)
💬 Example: "Devo scrivere una lettera di motivazione per candidarmi a questa posizione." (I need to write a cover letter to apply for this position.)
