The imperfect (imperfetto) — describing the past

The imperfetto expresses a lasting past situation, a state, a description, or a habit. It answers the question "what was it like?"

Forming the imperfetto

Remove the infinitive ending and add the imperfetto endings:

• io : parlavo (-are, parlare) / vedevo (-ere, vedere) / dormivo (-ire, dormire)
• tu : parlavi (-are, parlare) / vedevi (-ere, vedere) / dormivi (-ire, dormire)
• lui/lei : parlava (-are, parlare) / vedeva (-ere, vedere) / dormiva (-ire, dormire)
• noi : parlavamo (-are, parlare) / vedevamo (-ere, vedere) / dormivamo (-ire, dormire)
• voi : parlavate (-are, parlare) / vedevate (-ere, vedere) / dormivate (-ire, dormire)
• loro : parlavano (-are, parlare) / vedevano (-ere, vedere) / dormivano (-ire, dormire)

Irregular verb: essere

• io : ero
• tu : eri
• lui/lei : era
• noi : eravamo
• voi : eravate
• loro : erano

When to use the imperfetto?

• Descriptions: "Il cielo era blu." (The sky was blue.)
• Physical/emotional states: "Ero stanco." (I was tired.)
• Weather: "Faceva freddo." (It was cold.)
• Habits: "Da bambino, andavo al mare ogni estate." (As a child, I used to go to the sea every summer.)
• Simultaneous actions: "Mentre mangiavo, guardavo la TV." (While I was eating, I was watching TV.)

💬 Example: "L'atmosfera era fantastica, c'erano molte persone e tutti ballavano." (The atmosphere was fantastic, there were many people and everyone was dancing.)

💬 Example: "Quando ero piccolo, mia nonna cucinava sempre la pasta fatta in casa." (When I was little, my grandmother always used to make homemade pasta.)
