Adjective-noun agreement in Italian

In Italian, adjectives (including colours and materials) must agree in gender and number with the noun they describe.

Regular adjectives (4 forms — ending in -o):

• Masculine : Singular rosso / Plural rossi
• Feminine : Singular rossa / Plural rosse

Examples:

• un vestito rosso (m. sg.) → a red dress
• una camicia rossa (f. sg.) → a red shirt
• dei pantaloni rossi (m. pl.) → red trousers
• delle scarpe rosse (f. pl.) → red shoes

Invariable colour adjectives:

Some colours never change form, regardless of gender or number:

• blu → un vestito blu, una borsa blu, delle scarpe blu
• rosa → un fiore rosa, una gonna rosa
• viola → un cappello viola, una maglietta viola
• arancione → un vestito arancione, delle scarpe arancioni (some speakers do inflect this one)
• beige → un cappotto beige, una sciarpa beige

Compound colour adjectives are also invariable:

• verde chiaro → light green (never changes)
• blu scuro → dark blue (never changes)
• rosso vivo → bright red (never changes)

Expressing materials with "di":

• di cotone → made of cotton
• di pelle → made of leather
• di lana → made of wool
• di seta → made of silk
• di lino → made of linen

The material expression comes after the colour:

• Una borsa di pelle nera. → A black leather bag.
• Un maglione di lana rossa. → A red wool sweater.

💬 Esempio: "Ho una borsa di pelle nera." → "I have a black leather bag."

💬 Esempio: "Questi pantaloni sono di cotone blu." → "These trousers are blue cotton."

💬 Esempio: "Vorrei quella gonna verde chiaro." → "I'd like that light green skirt."
