The Power of Words in Hindi
In the Hindu philosophical tradition, वाक् (speech/word) is not merely a communicative tool but a cosmic force. The Vedic concept of वाक् as divine, the performative power of मंत्र (sacred formula), and the idea that speech can create, preserve, or destroy reality — these beliefs underpin the Hindi speaker s deep cultural relationship with language.
At the secular level, the power of words manifests in वक्तृत्व (oratory). Hindi political rhetoric has a rich tradition, from the impassioned speeches of Bal Gangadhar Tilak and Jawaharlal Nehru to the charged populism of contemporary political discourse. The great orator does not merely inform — they move, inspire, and transform through language.
The Sanskrit concept of अनुनय (persuasion) is analysed in classical rhetorical treatises as a complex art involving logical proof (युक्ति), emotional appeal (भावना), and the establishment of the speaker s credibility (प्रतिष्ठा). These three elements map directly onto Aristotle s logos, pathos, and ethos — suggesting a convergent global understanding of persuasion.
Words also carry destructive potential. निंदा (defamation/slander) is treated as a serious moral transgression in classical Hindu ethics, and contemporary India s legal framework reflects this sensitivity through stringent defamation laws.
The concept of वचन (word as vow) reveals another dimension of linguistic power — the speech act that creates obligation. When a Hindi speaker says मेरा वचन है (it is my word/vow), the statement carries moral weight that transcends the merely contractual. Language here becomes pledge, identity, and honour.
