When discussing pros and cons in German, you need connectors (Konnektoren) that link contrasting or supporting ideas.
Concessive connectors (expressing contrast):
- obwohl + subordinate clause (verb at end): Obwohl es teuer ist, kaufe ich es. (Although it is expensive, I buy it.)
- trotzdem + main clause (verb in position 2): Es ist teuer. Trotzdem kaufe ich es. (It is expensive. Nevertheless, I buy it.)
Causal and additive connectors:
- deshalb / deswegen (therefore): Es regnet, deshalb bleibe ich zu Hause.
- außerdem (moreover): Es ist billig. Außerdem ist die Qualität gut.
- jedoch (however): Das Essen war gut, jedoch war der Service schlecht.
Key difference: After obwohl, the verb goes to the end (subordinate clause). After trotzdem, deshalb, jedoch, the verb stays in position 2 (main clause with inversion).
