Verlan: French Back-Slang

Verlan reverses syllables to create slang. It originated in the suburbs and is now mainstream among young French speakers.

femme → meuf (woman)
fou → ouf (crazy)
bizarre → zarbi (weird)

Contemporary Slang Structures

Modern French slang borrows from Arabic, English, and African languages:

J'ai le seum — I'm so frustrated (from Arabic)
C'est un bail de ouf — It's a crazy situation
On va tchiller — We're gonna chill

The Oral Register

Spoken French drops syllables, uses on instead of nous, and omits ne in negation:

J'sais pas (instead of je ne sais pas) — I don't know
T'as vu ? (instead of tu as vu ?) — Did you see?
Y'a personne (instead of il n'y a personne) — There's nobody

Understanding slang is essential for natural conversation, even if you choose not to use it yourself.
