Formal inversions (registre soutenu):
- Rarement voit-on une telle situation. (Rarely does one see such a situation.)
- Non seulement a-t-il réussi, mais il a excellé. (Not only did he succeed, but he excelled.)
- À peine était-il arrivé qu'il repartit. (He had barely arrived when he left again.)
Standard vs Formal comparison:
- Courant: On ne voit pas ça souvent. → Soutenu: Rarement observe-t-on cela.
- Courant: Il a aussi gagné le prix. → Soutenu: De surcroît, il a remporté le prix.
Key principle: The formal register uses subject-verb inversion after adverbs like rarement, à peine, non seulement, and peut-être. This mirrors literary and administrative French, essential for professional and academic contexts.
