Writing a Structured Essay in French
The French Essay Structure
A French essay (dissertation) follows a strict structure: introduction, development (2-3 parts), and conclusion.
Introduction pattern:
De nos jours, la question de... se pose avec acuité. — Nowadays, the question of... arises acutely.
Il convient de s'interroger sur les enjeux de... — It is appropriate to examine the stakes of...
Dans un premier temps, nous analyserons... puis nous verrons... — First, we will analyze... then we will see...
Logical Connectors for Argumentation
- Adding — De plus, En outre, Par ailleurs: De plus, cette mesure favorise l'égalité.
- Opposing — En revanche, Cependant, Toutefois: Cependant, des limites persistent.
- Concluding — En somme, En définitive, Pour conclure: En définitive, le bilan est mitigé.
- Illustrating — Notamment, En particulier, Par exemple: Notamment dans le domaine de la santé.
Impersonal Constructions
Academic French avoids "je" and favors impersonal constructions:
Il est indéniable que... — It is undeniable that...
Force est de constater que... — One must acknowledge that...
Il apparaît que... — It appears that...
On ne saurait ignorer que... — One cannot ignore that...
Introducing Examples
- à titre d'exemple — as an example
- c'est le cas de — this is the case of
- comme en témoigne — as evidenced by
- il suffit de considérer — one need only consider
