Expressing Rights and Entitlements

French has specific structures for claiming rights and asserting entitlements at B2 level.

Key right-claiming structures:

Vous avez le droit de demander un remboursement. — You have the right to request a refund.

Le consommateur est en droit d'exiger une réparation. — The consumer is entitled to demand a repair.

Conformément à la loi, vous bénéficiez d'un délai de rétractation. — In accordance with the law, you benefit from a cooling-off period.

Formal Complaint Language

• Je me permets de — I take the liberty of: Je me permets de vous signaler un défaut.
• Je souhaiterais que — I would like (that): Je souhaiterais que vous examiniez mon dossier.
• Il s'avère que — It turns out that: Il s'avère que le produit est défectueux.
• Je vous saurais gré de — I would be grateful if: Je vous saurais gré de me répondre rapidement.

The Conditional for Polite Demands

In consumer contexts, the conditional softens demands while remaining firm:

Je voudrais être remboursé(e). — I would like to be refunded.

Pourriez-vous me transférer au responsable ? — Could you transfer me to the manager?

Il conviendrait de régler ce problème. — It would be appropriate to resolve this problem.

Legal Time Expressions

• dans un délai de — within a period of: dans un délai de 14 jours
• à compter de — from (date): à compter de la date d'achat
• au plus tard le — no later than: au plus tard le 30 juin
