French humour relies heavily on litote (understatement), euphemism, and irony. Understanding these devices is essential for B2-level comprehension.

Litote (understatement): Saying less to mean more. The most famous example:

Ce n'est pas mal. (It's not bad.) = It's actually very good.
Il n'est pas bête. (He's not stupid.) = He's actually quite clever.

Euphemism:

Il nous a quittés. (He left us.) = He passed away.
C'est un peu léger. (It's a bit light.) = It's clearly insufficient.

Irony — saying the opposite of what you mean:

Quelle belle journée ! (What a beautiful day!) — said during a storm.
Bravo, c'est du beau travail ! (Bravo, great work!) — said about a disaster.

Double meaning (double sens): Many French jokes play on words that sound alike but have different meanings. For example, canard means both "duck" and "newspaper."

Self-deprecation (autodérision): The French appreciate self-deprecating humour:

Je suis tellement doué que j'ai réussi à me perdre dans ma propre ville. (I'm so gifted that I managed to get lost in my own city.)

The fixed expression is jeu de mots (plural) even for a single pun.

Autodérision is used with faire de l' as an uncountable concept.

C'est ironique de sa part
Use de sa part (on his/her part) rather than de lui for this meaning.
