French news headlines use two special grammar features: the passive voice and nominalisation.
Passive voice (voix passive): Formed with être + past participle. The subject receives the action:
- Le suspect a été arrêté. (The suspect was arrested.)
- La loi a été votée par le Sénat. (The law was passed by the Senate.)
- Les victimes ont été secourues. (The victims were rescued.)
Nominalisation in headlines: Headlines often drop verbs and use nouns instead:
- Arrestation du suspect (instead of Le suspect a été arrêté)
- Hausse des prix (instead of Les prix ont augmenté)
- Découverte d'un vaccin (instead of On a découvert un vaccin)
Key patterns in headlines:
- Articles are often omitted: Président en visite à Berlin
- Present tense is used for recent events: La France gagne le match
- Colons separate topic and detail: Climat : les températures augmentent

Типичные ошибки
Le suspect a arrêté par la police.Le suspect a été arrêté par la police.Passive voice requires 'être' + past participle, not just 'avoir'.
La loi a été voté.La loi a été votée.In passive voice, the past participle agrees with the subject (la loi = feminine).
Les victimes ont été secouré.Les victimes ont été secourues.Past participle must agree in gender and number (feminine plural).
Le président est élu en 2022.Le président a été élu en 2022.For a past event, use passé composé passive (a été), not present.
L'augmentation des prix a été.Une hausse des prix a été constatée.The passive needs a complete verb phrase — add a past participle.
