Understanding the French healthcare system requires the conditional si + présent, futur structure and polite conditional forms.
Si + présent, futur simple:
- Si vous avez une mutuelle, vous serez mieux remboursé. (If you have supplementary insurance, you will be better reimbursed.)
- Si vous allez aux urgences, vous devrez attendre. (If you go to the ER, you will have to wait.)
Conditionnel de politesse:
- Je voudrais savoir si ma consultation est couverte. (I would like to know if my appointment is covered.)
- Pourriez-vous m'expliquer le remboursement ? (Could you explain the reimbursement to me?)
The French healthcare system:
- La carte vitale is the health insurance card that covers most medical costs
- La sécurité sociale reimburses about 70% of standard medical expenses
- Une mutuelle is supplementary private insurance that covers the remaining 30%
- Le médecin traitant is your designated family doctor — you must see them first for referrals

Si j'aurai une mutuelle, je serai couvert.Si j'ai une mutuelle, je serai couvert.After 'si', use present tense (not future). The future goes in the main clause.
Je vais au urgences.Je vais aux urgences.Use 'aux' (à + les) before plural nouns, not 'au'.
Mon docteur traitant m'a envoyé.Mon médecin traitant m'a orienté vers un spécialiste.The correct term is 'médecin traitant' (not 'docteur traitant') and 'orienter vers'.
La sécurité social rembourse tout.La sécurité sociale ne rembourse pas tout.'Sociale' needs the -e ending (feminine) and the system only reimburses about 70%.
Si vous avez pas d'assurance, vous payez tout.Si vous n'avez pas d'assurance, vous payez tout.Don't drop 'ne' in the formal register — 'ne...pas' is required.
