Telling a Story in the Past
To tell a story well in French, you need time connectors to organize your events in order.
Sequencing Words
Use these to structure your narrative:
- D'abord — first
- Ensuite / Puis — then
- Après — after that
- Soudain — suddenly
- Enfin / Finalement — finally
D'abord, j'ai pris le bus. Ensuite, je suis arrivé au parc. Soudain, il a commencé à pleuvoir. Enfin, je suis rentré à la maison.
Before and During
- Avant — before: Avant le dîner, j'ai fait du sport.
- Pendant — during: Pendant le film, j'ai dormi.
Building a Narrative
Combine connectors with passé composé to create a smooth story:
D'abord, on a visité le musée. Puis, on a mangé dans un restaurant. Après, on s'est promenés. Enfin, on est rentrés fatigués mais contents.
