Improvising in Dutch requires a toolkit of fillers and reformulation strategies that buy you thinking time while sounding eloquent.
Intelligent fillers (not uhm!):
- Dat is een terechte opmerking... (That is a valid remark...)
- Laat ik het zo formuleren... (Let me put it this way...)
- Als ik het goed begrijp, vraagt u eigenlijk... (If I understand correctly, you are actually asking...)
Reformulating: Met andere woorden... (In other words...), Wat ik eigenlijk bedoel, is... (What I actually mean is...), Om het anders te zeggen... (To put it differently...).
Picking up the thread: Waar was ik gebleven? (Where was I?), Om terug te komen op mijn punt... (To return to my point...), De draad weer oppakkend... (Picking up the thread again...).
Acknowledging uncertainty: Uit het hoofd gezegd... (Off the top of my head...), Als ik me niet vergis... (If I am not mistaken...), Ik zou moeten nakijken, maar... (I would need to check, but...).
The key to improvisation is confidence. These phrases give you breathing room while maintaining your authority as a speaker.

Om op mijn punt te komen terug...Om terug te komen op mijn punt...Terug comes before te komen in the infinitive construction.
Als ik goed begrijp...Als ik het goed begrijp...The pronoun het is required: als ik het goed begrijp.
