To describe seasonal activities, use als (when) with the present tense: Als het lente is, bloeien de bloemen (When it's spring, the flowers bloom). Remember: after als, the verb goes to the end of the clause. The impersonal er is a placeholder subject: Er vallen bladeren in de herfst (Leaves fall in autumn). For weather: Het vriest in de winter (It freezes in winter), Het waait hard (It's very windy). Dutch uses in de + season: in de lente (in spring), in de zomer (in summer). The preposition in is essential — in de winter, NOT just de winter. The Netherlands has a famously flat, windy landscape, so weather talk is very common!
