Internet Language & Neologisms in Chinese
Chinese internet language (网络用语) evolves faster than any dictionary can track. At C2 level, understanding the grammar of neologism formation is as important as knowing the words themselves.
Word Formation Patterns
Abbreviations (缩略语):
- YYDS = 永远的神 (forever the god = GOAT) — pinyin initial letters
- XSWL = 笑死我了 (laughing to death) — pinyin initials
- yysy = 有一说一 (to be honest)
Semantic Extension:
- 卷 originally means "roll" or "curl" — extended to obsessive overwork
- 破防 (break defence) — extended to emotional overwhelm
- 躺平 (lie flat) — extended to opting out of competitive society
Numeric Codes:
- 520 sounds like 我爱你 (I love you)
- 666 = very skilled (sounds like 溜溜溜 = smooth)
- 996 = exploitative work schedule
Register and Context
These terms are appropriate in:
- Casual conversation and social media
- Commentary on social phenomena
- Creative writing that represents youth voice
They are inappropriate in formal or academic writing. Knowing which register you are in is the C2 skill.
躺平 entered formal media in 2021 and was even discussed in government statements — a sign that a neologism has truly arrived.

Типичные ошибки
他很YYDS。他真的YYDS！YYDS functions as a predicate complement, not a simple adjective after 很. Use 真的 to intensify.
我今天emo了一下。我今天有点emo。了一下 implies a brief discrete action. Emotional states use 有点 for degree.
这件事让我破防了很多。这件事直接让我破防了。破防 describes a threshold crossing — it is binary, not gradable with 很多.
他躺平地生活着。他选择了躺平。躺平 is a nominal/verbal concept, not an adverb. It cannot modify a verb with 地.
我996每天工作。我每天996。996 is a predicate itself. Adding 工作 creates redundancy — 996 already implies working.
