The Socratic Method in Chinese
The Socratic method uses questions to expose assumptions, contradictions, and hidden premises. At C1, applying it in Chinese helps you think and discuss more rigorously.
Core technique — expose the assumption: When someone makes a claim, do not accept it; ask 这里的前提是什么？(What is the premise here?)
Steps of Socratic questioning in Chinese:
1. Ask for clarification: 你所说的……具体指的是什么？ (What exactly do you mean by...?) 2. Question the basis: 这一结论是基于什么依据？ (What is the basis for this conclusion?) 3. Expose contradiction: 但你刚才说……，这不是和你的主张自相矛盾吗？ (But you just said... is that not self-contradictory?) 4. Probe the implication: 如果这一点成立，那是否意味着……？ (If this holds, does it mean that...?) 5. Challenge universality: 这个结论是否适用于所有情况？ (Does this conclusion apply in all cases?)
Cultural note: Chinese intellectual tradition values 辩证思维 (dialectical thinking) — using Socratic questioning fits naturally with the classical Chinese mode of debate (辩论).
