Defending a Thesis in Chinese
The oral defense (答辩) requires you to maintain your position under pressure while responding respectfully to challenging questions.
Concession structures
At C1 level, conceding a point while maintaining your position is a sophisticated skill:
- 尽管如此 — nevertheless / even so
- 尽管如此，本研究仍具有重要的参考价值。
- 即便如此 — even if that is the case
- 即便如此，该方法论的创新性不容忽视。
- 诚然...但是/然而 — admittedly... but/however
- 诚然，样本量有所局限，但研究结论仍值得重视。
Defending and refuting
To defend your position:
- 我坚持认为，... (I maintain that...)
- 数据表明，这一担忧并不成立。(Data show this concern is unfounded.)
- 本研究已充分考虑了这一变量。(This study fully accounted for this variable.)
To politely refute a critique:
- 您提出的问题非常重要，但需要指出的是... (Your question is important, but it should be noted that...)
- 这一质疑值得进一步探讨，然而... (This doubt deserves further exploration, however...)
Signalling the limits of your work
- 本研究存在一定的局限性，主要体现在...
- 未来的研究可以在此基础上进一步深化。
