Collocations in Portuguese
What Are Collocations?
Collocations are word combinations that native speakers naturally use together. Unlike idioms, each word keeps its meaning, but the pairing is fixed by convention.
Types of Portuguese Collocations
Verb + Noun: These are the most common. Portuguese often uses different verbs than English:
- Prestar atenção (not dar atenção)
- Tomar uma decisão (not fazer uma decisão)
- Correr um risco (not ter um risco)
Verb + Preposition + Noun: Many collocations include a fixed preposition:
- Pôr em causa (to call into question)
- Dar origem a (to give rise to)
- Tirar partido de (to take advantage of)
Adjective + Noun: Certain adjectives naturally pair with specific nouns:
- Uma vasta experiência (extensive experience)
- Um profundo conhecimento (deep knowledge)
Why Collocations Matter at C1
Using the right collocations distinguishes a competent speaker from a truly fluent one. Incorrect collocations are immediately noticeable to native speakers, even when grammatically correct.
Tip: Learn collocations as fixed units rather than translating word-by-word from your language.
