Creative Writing
Portuguese creative writing uses specific narrative techniques and literary devices:
Narrative perspectives:
- Primeira pessoa: Eu caminhava pela rua quando... (First person: I was walking down the street when...)
- Terceira pessoa: Ele caminhava pela rua quando... (Third person: He was walking down the street when...)
Using tenses for narrative effect:
- Pretérito imperfeito for setting the scene: O sol brilhava e as aves cantavam. (The sun was shining and the birds were singing.)
- Pretérito perfeito for key actions: De repente, ouviu um grito. (Suddenly, he heard a scream.)
- Present tense for dramatic immediacy: Abre a porta. Não há ninguém. (He opens the door. There is nobody.)
Descriptive techniques:
- Comparisons: Os olhos dela brilhavam como estrelas. (Her eyes shone like stars.)
- Metaphors: A cidade era um formigueiro humano. (The city was a human anthill.)
- Personification: O vento sussurrava segredos. (The wind whispered secrets.)
The alternation between imperfeito (background) and perfeito (foreground actions) is the key narrative technique in Portuguese storytelling.
