Reporting an Incident: Pretérito Perfeito
Use the pretérito perfeito to report what happened:
- Roubaram-me a carteira. (They stole my wallet.)
- Perdi o passaporte. (I lost my passport.)
- O voo foi cancelado. (The flight was cancelled.)
Asking for Help Urgently
Use the imperativo or polite forms for urgent requests:
- Ajude-me, por favor! (Help me, please!)
- Pode chamar a polícia? (Can you call the police?)
- Preciso de falar com alguém da embaixada. (I need to speak to someone from the embassy.)
"Ter de" for Urgent Obligations
- Tenho de ir à esquadra. (I have to go to the police station.)
- Temos de contactar o seguro. (We have to contact the insurance.)
Narrating a Sequence of Events
- Primeiro, perdi a mala. Depois, fui à esquadra. Finalmente, liguei para o seguro. (First, I lost my bag. Then, I went to the police station. Finally, I called the insurance.)
Tip: In Portugal, the emergency number is 112 (European standard). "Esquadra" is the police station, "PSP" is the public security police.
