Polite Requests and Complaints
Use the imperfeito or condicional to be polite when addressing neighbours:
- Importava-se de baixar a música? (Would you mind turning down the music?)
- Poderia fazer menos barulho? (Could you make less noise?)
Expressing Annoyance
- O barulho incomoda-me muito. (The noise bothers me a lot.)
- Não consigo dormir com tanto barulho. (I can't sleep with so much noise.)
Reflexive Verbs for Neighbour Relations
- Queixei-me ao senhorio. (I complained to the landlord.)
- Damo-nos bem com os vizinhos. (We get along well with the neighbours.)
- Eles zangaram-se por causa do lixo. (They argued because of the rubbish.)
"É proibido" / "É obrigatório"
Building rules:
- É proibido fazer barulho depois das 22h. (It's forbidden to make noise after 10pm.)
- É obrigatório separar o lixo. (It's mandatory to separate waste.)
Tip: In Portuguese apartment buildings, "condomínio" refers to the management and shared costs, not the building itself.
