Pretérito Perfeito for Reporting Events
Use the pretérito perfeito to report what happened:
- Roubaram-me a carteira. — They stole my wallet.
- O voo foi cancelado. — The flight was cancelled.
- Perdi o meu passaporte. — I lost my passport.
Conditional for Polite Requests
Use the conditional (futuro do pretérito) for polite requests:
- eu — poderia
- você — poderia
- nós — poderíamos
- Poderia ajudar-me? — Could you help me?
- Quereria fazer uma reclamação. — I would like to make a complaint.
Useful Constructions
Aconteceu + noun — Something happened:
- Aconteceu um problema. — A problem happened.
Precisar de + noun — To need something:
- Preciso de ajuda. — I need help.
- Preciso de ligar para a embaixada. — I need to call the embassy.
