Frequentar vs. Assistir a
- Frequentar = to attend (regularly, be enrolled): Frequento a universidade de Lisboa. — I attend the University of Lisbon.
- Assistir a = to attend (a specific class/event): Assisti à aula de história. — I attended the history class.
Expressing Obligation: Ter de + Infinitive
Use ter de (European PT) to express necessity:
- Tenho de estudar para o exame. — I have to study for the exam.
- Tivemos de entregar o trabalho ontem. — We had to submit the assignment yesterday.
The Verb Formar-se (to graduate)
This is a reflexive verb:
- Formei-me em direito. — I graduated in law.
- Ela formou-se no ano passado. — She graduated last year.
Desde / Há with Time Expressions
- Há + duration: Estudo aqui há dois anos. — I've been studying here for two years.
- Desde + starting point: Estudo aqui desde 2024. — I've been studying here since 2024.

Tenho que estudar para o exame.Tenho de estudar para o exame.In European Portuguese, the standard form is ter de + infinitive, not ter que.
Eu formei em direito.Eu formei-me em direito.Formar-se is reflexive; the pronoun me is required.
Estudo aqui desde dois anos.Estudo aqui há dois anos.Use há for durations (for two years). Desde is for starting points (desde 2024).
Passei em todas as cadeiras.Passei a todas as cadeiras.The verb passar takes the preposition a (not em) when meaning to pass a subject.
