Expressing Ability and Progress
Conseguir + Infinitive (to manage to / to be able to)
Use conseguir to express ability or success at doing something:
- Eu consigo compreender português. — I can understand Portuguese.
- Ela não consegue pronunciar o "ão". — She can't pronounce "ão".
Estar a + Infinitive (to be doing)
This construction expresses an action in progress (European Portuguese):
- Estou a aprender português. — I'm learning Portuguese.
- Estamos a melhorar a pronúncia. — We're improving our pronunciation.
Comparatives with Melhor / Pior
- O meu português está melhor do que antes. — My Portuguese is better than before.
- A minha pronúncia é pior do que a escrita. — My pronunciation is worse than my writing.
Precisar de + Infinitive (to need to)
- Preciso de praticar mais. — I need to practise more.
- Precisamos de estudar gramática. — We need to study grammar.

Typowe błędy
Eu consigo de falar português.Eu consigo falar português.Conseguir is followed directly by the infinitive, without a preposition.
Estou aprendendo português.Estou a aprender português.In European Portuguese, use estar a + infinitive, not estar + gerund.
Preciso praticar mais.Preciso de praticar mais.Precisar requires the preposition de before the infinitive.
O meu português é mais melhor.O meu português está melhor.Melhor is already a comparative; do not add mais. Use estar for states that change.
Como diz-se isso?Como se diz isso?In questions with an interrogative word, the pronoun se comes before the verb.
