Imperfetto + Passato prossimo: Narrating an Event
To recount a past event in Italian, you combine the imperfetto and the passato prossimo based on the role of each action.
Imperfetto = the background, the ongoing context
- What was in progress (continuous action)
- stava camminando (was walking)
- stavano lavorando (were working)
- pioveva (it was raining)
Passato prossimo = the event that occurs suddenly
- What interrupted or happened unexpectedly
- è caduto (fell)
- ha sentito un rumore (heard a noise)
Classic structures:
- Stava camminando quando è accaduto l'incidente.
(He/she was walking when the accident happened.)
- Stavano lavorando mentre il terremoto ha colpito.
(They were working while the earthquake struck.)
- Il testimone guardava fuori quando ha visto la scena.
(The witness was looking outside when he/she saw the scene.)
Keywords to identify which tense to use:
- quando, mentre → often imperfetto for the context
- poi, improvvisamente, all'improvviso → passato prossimo for the event
