To compare things at the highest degree, Italian uses the relative superlative and the absolute superlative.

The relative superlative (the most... in/of...) is formed with the definite article + più + adjective + di: Il Colosseo è il monumento più famoso d''Italia. (The Colosseum is the most famous monument in Italy.) Roma è la città più visitata del mondo. (Rome is the most visited city in the world.) Questo museo è il più grande della regione. (This museum is the largest in the region.)

The absolute superlative is formed by adding the suffix -issimo/a/i/e to the adjective: Il duomo è bellissimo. (The cathedral is very beautiful.) Il quartiere storico è antichissimo. (The historic district is very ancient.) La fontana è grandissima. (The fountain is very large.)

Note: with -issimo, the final vowel of the adjective is dropped before adding the suffix.

Il duomo è il monumento più famoso d'Italia.

In the relative superlative the adjective comes after the noun

  • Questo quartiere è molto bellissimo.
    Questo quartiere è bellissimo.

Bellissimo is already an absolute superlative do not use molto with it

  • È il museo più grande in Italia.
È il museo più grande d'Italia.

With the relative superlative use di not in

    Gira a sinistra al semaforo.

Use 'al' (a + il) before 'semaforo', not 'nel'

  • La stazione è molto vicino.
    La stazione è molto vicina.

vicino agrees with the noun: vicina (feminine) for stazione

  • Vai sempre diritto e poi gira alla destra.
Vai sempre dritto e poi gira a destra.

use dritto (not diritto) and a destra (without article)
