Time Prepositions in Italian

In Italian, time prepositions change depending on what type of time expression you are using. Here is a complete guide:

With days of the week:

• di + day (habitual / every) → Di lunedì vado in palestra. (On Mondays / Every Monday I go to the gym.)
• il + day (specific occurrence) → Il lunedì parto per Roma. (This/Next Monday I leave for Rome.)

Note: Days of the week are not capitalized in Italian: lunedì, martedì, mercoledì, giovedì, venerdì, sabato, domenica.

With months:

• a + month or in + month: a gennaio / in gennaio (in January)
• Il mio compleanno è a marzo. → My birthday is in March.

With seasons:

• primavera (spring) → in / di → in primavera, di primavera
• estate (summer) → in / d' → in estate, d'estate
• autunno (autumn) → in / d' → in autunno, d'autunno
• inverno (winter) → in / d' → in inverno, d'inverno

With times of day:

• di mattina → in the morning
• di pomeriggio → in the afternoon
• di sera → in the evening
• di notte → at night

With years and dates:

• nel + year: nel 2024 (in 2024)
• il + number + month: il 5 marzo (on March 5th)
