Using Perfekt to Describe Travel Problems

When you need to explain a travel problem, the Perfekt tense is essential. Combined with expressions for asking for help, it lets you communicate in difficult situations.

Describing what happened:

Ich habe meinen Koffer verloren. (I lost my suitcase.)
Wir haben den Zug verpasst. (We missed the train.)
Der Flug ist storniert worden. (The flight was cancelled.)

Asking for help:

Können Sie mir bitte helfen? (Can you please help me?)
Ich brauche Hilfe. (I need help.)
Wo ist das Fundbüro? (Where is the lost and found?)

Explaining the problem: Combine Perfekt with weil to give the reason: Ich bin spät, weil der Zug Verspätung hatte. (I am late because the train was delayed.)

Remember: verlieren uses haben in Perfekt (habe verloren), but ankommen uses sein (bin angekommen).
