The Superlative in German

The superlative expresses the highest degree of a quality. In German, it is formed in two ways:

With a noun → der/die/das + adjective + -ste :

schnell → der schnellste Weg (the fastest way)
nah → die nächste Haltestelle (the nearest stop)
groß → das größte Gebäude (the biggest building)

Without a noun (adverb) → am + adjective + -sten :

Die U-Bahn fährt am schnellsten. (The subway goes the fastest.)
Der Bahnhof ist am nächsten. (The station is the closest.)

Common changes: Short adjectives often gain an Umlaut: groß → größt-, nah → nächst-, lang → längst-. Some are irregular: gut → best-, viel → meist-, gern → liebst-.

The superlative is very useful when asking for directions: Was ist der schnellste Weg zum Bahnhof?
