Mit + dative for transport
In German, to say how you travel, use mit + dative:
- Ich fahre mit dem Bus. (I take the bus.)
- Ich fahre mit der U-Bahn. (I take the subway.)
- Ich fahre mit dem Zug. (I take the train.)
The verb fahren (to go by vehicle) is irregular:
- ich fahre, du fährst, er/sie fährt
To ask which transport to take:
- Welche Linie fährt zum Bahnhof? (Which line goes to the station?)
- Muss ich umsteigen? (Do I need to change?)
Important separable verbs:
- einsteigen: to get on (Steigen Sie ein!)
- aussteigen: to get off (Steigen Sie aus!)
- umsteigen: to change (Sie müssen umsteigen.)
On foot, you say: Ich gehe zu Fuß.
