Local prepositions
In German, to indicate a location, you use prepositions that require the dative case (for position):
- neben dem Bahnhof (next to the train station)
- gegenüber dem Restaurant (opposite the restaurant)
- zwischen dem Park und der Kirche (between the park and the church)
To ask for directions:
- Wo ist der Bahnhof? (Where is the train station?)
- Wie komme ich zum Markt? (How do I get to the market?)
- Entschuldigung, ich suche die Post. (Excuse me, I am looking for the post office.)
To give directions:
- Gehen Sie geradeaus. (Go straight ahead.)
- Biegen Sie links ab. (Turn left.)
- Nehmen Sie die zweite Straße rechts. (Take the second street on the right.)
Note: zu + dative = towards a destination:
- zum Bahnhof (= zu dem Bahnhof)
- zur Post (= zu der Post)
