Show, Don't Tell

The golden rule of creative writing applies in French too. Instead of stating emotions, reveal them through action and detail:

Telling: Elle était triste. — She was sad.
Showing: Elle fixait la tasse refroidie, le doigt traçant le bord sans fin. — She stared at the cold cup, her finger tracing the rim endlessly.

Realistic Dialogue

French dialogue uses specific punctuation: tirets cadratins (em dashes) instead of quotation marks:

— Tu pars déjà ? demanda-t-il.
— Je n'ai pas le choix, répondit-elle sans le regarder.

Narrative Pacing

Control rhythm through sentence length:

Short sentences = tension, urgency: "Il courut. La porte claqua. Silence."
Long sentences = reflection, description: flowing, detailed passages
Fragments = impact: "Seul. Toujours seul."
