This lesson teaches you how to handle problems while traveling abroad, using the conditional for polite requests.
Le conditionnel présent is formed with the future stem + imparfait endings (-ais, -ais, -ait, -ions, -iez, -aient): Je voudrais signaler un vol (I would like to report a theft).
Polite requests at a police station or embassy:
- Pourriez-vous m'aider ? (Could you help me?)
- J'aurais besoin d'un formulaire (I would need a form)
- Il faudrait contacter mon assurance (I should contact my insurance)
Describing what happened uses the passé composé: On m'a volé mon sac (Someone stole my bag), J'ai perdu mon passeport (I lost my passport).
Key structure: Il faut que + subjunctive for obligations: Il faut que j'aille au commissariat (I need to go to the police station). At B1, memorize common forms: que j'aille, que je fasse, que je puisse.
