Polite Modals: "Zou u het erg vinden om...?"
When dealing with neighbours, being extra polite is crucial. Dutch has specific polite modal constructions for making requests and expressing concerns.
The Golden Formula
Zou u het erg vinden om + te + infinitive? "Would you mind...?"
- Zou u het erg vinden om de muziek zachter te zetten?
- Zou u het erg vinden om na 22:00 stil te zijn?
Other Polite Patterns
- Zou u willen... → Would you like to...
- Zou het mogelijk zijn om... → Would it be possible to...
- Zou ik u mogen vragen om... → May I ask you to...
Softening with "Misschien" and "Eventueel"
- Misschien kunt u de muziek wat zachter zetten? (Perhaps...)

Expressing Concerns Politely
- Ik wilde u even laten weten dat... (I wanted to let you know that...)

Tip: In Dutch neighbour disputes, the more polite you are, the more seriously your concern is taken. Start soft, escalate only if needed.
