Informal Dutch in Messages
Common abbreviations
Dutch texting uses many abbreviations:
- bv / bijv. — bijvoorbeeld (for example)
- enz. — enzovoort (etc.)
- a.u.b. / aub — alstublieft (please)
- mvg — met vriendelijke groet (kind regards)
- gr / groetjes — groeten (greetings)
Informal tone
Messages in Dutch are typically informal:
- Hoi! instead of Geachte heer/mevrouw
- Xx or Kusje (kiss) at the end
- Tot snel! (See you soon!)
- Bedankt! instead of Hartelijk dank
Common message phrases
- Ik stuur je een appje. (I'll text you.)
- Laat maar weten! (Let me know!)
- Geen probleem! (No problem!)
- Maakt niet uit. (Doesn't matter.)
Tip: "Appen" (to send a WhatsApp message) is a real Dutch verb! Ik app, jij appt.

Ik zend je een bericht.Ik stuur je een bericht.Use "sturen" (to send) in everyday language, not "zenden" (formal/archaic).
Antwoord mij snel.Antwoord me snel.Use "me" (unstressed) instead of "mij" (stressed) in casual contexts.
Dank je voor het bericht.Bedankt voor je bericht."Bedankt" is more natural than "dank je" at the start. No article before "je bericht".
Ik type een bericht.Ik typ een bericht.The verb is "typen": ik typ, jij typt (no -e in first person).
