Parallelism and Antithesis

Parallelism (排比) and Antithesis (对仗)

These two rhetorical devices are central to powerful Chinese writing and speech. Mastering them elevates your language from correct to compelling.

排比 — Parallelism

Three or more phrases with the same structure, building momentum.

• 我们要努力工作，我们要积极创新，我们要勇于担当。
• "We must work hard, we must innovate boldly, we must have the courage to take responsibility."

Pattern: [Subject + Verb + Object] × 3+ The power increases with each iteration. Three is the minimum; more builds more force.

💬 Famous example: 人生自古谁无死，留取丹心照汗青。

"Since ancient times, who has not died? Let a loyal heart shine in the pages of history."

对仗 — Antithesis / Balanced Pairs

Two phrases that mirror each other in structure, often opposing in meaning.

• 虚心使人进步，骄傲使人落后。
• "Modesty leads to progress, arrogance leads to backwardness."

Structure: [A makes B] / [C makes D] — symmetrical syllable count, contrasting meaning.

整句 vs 散句

• 整句 (balanced sentences): multiple parallel clauses — formal, elegant
• 散句 (loose sentences): varied lengths, natural — conversational
