# Making a Complaint in Russian
Complaining politely but firmly is an important skill. Russian uses specific constructions for this.
Starting a complaint:
- Я хотел бы пожаловаться на... — I would like to complain about...
- У меня проблема с товаром. — I have a problem with the product.
- Это не соответствует описанию. — This does not match the description.
Requesting action:
- Прошу вас заменить товар. — I ask you to replace the product. (formal imperative via прошу + infinitive)
- Верните мне деньги, пожалуйста. — Please give me a refund.
- Мне нужно поговорить с менеджером. — I need to speak with the manager.
Reported speech for escalating:
- Они сказали, что товар новый, но он сломан. — They said the product was new, but it is broken.
Passive constructions:
- Товар был повреждён при доставке. — The product was damaged during delivery. (-ся / short passive)
Expressions
- Я хотел бы вернуть этот товарI would like to return this product
- Он оказался бракованнымIt turned out to be defective

Common mistakes
Я жалую на качество товараЯ жалуюсь на качество товараThe verb is жаловаться (reflexive); the correct form is жалуюсь, not жалую
Прошу возврат мне денегПрошу вернуть мне деньгиUse прошу + infinitive вернуть; возврат is a noun and cannot follow прошу directly this way
Товар сломался во время доставкаТовар сломался во время доставкиВо время takes genitive case: доставки, not nominative доставка
Я хочу говорить с менеджерЯ хочу поговорить с менеджеромС takes instrumental case: с менеджером; also поговорить (pf) is more natural for one conversation
Мне вернули деньги обратноМне вернули деньгиВернули already implies back; обратно is redundant — avoid this pleonasm
