# Sports and Motivation in Russian

Talking about sports habits in Russian requires the imperfective past for ongoing habits.

Expressing ongoing sport habits:

  • Я занимаюсь бегом уже два года. — I have been running for two years.
  • Она ходит в спортзал три раза в неделю. — She goes to the gym three times a week.
  • Мы занимались плаванием всё лето. — We were swimming all summer.

Expressing goals:

  • Я хочу пробежать марафон. — I want to run a marathon.
  • Моя цель — похудеть на пять килограммов. — My goal is to lose five kilograms.

Motivation vocabulary:

  • Не сдавайся! — Do not give up!
  • Продолжай в том же духе! — Keep it up!
  • Ты справишься! — You can do it!

Key verb: заниматься + instrumental:

  • заниматься спортом — to do sport
  • заниматься йогой — to do yoga
  • заниматься плаванием — to swim

Expressions

  • Я занимаюсь спортом три раза в неделюI do sport three times a week
  • Я тренируюсь уже годI have been training for a year
  • Моя цель — похудетьMy goal is to lose weight
  • Не сдавайся, у тебя получитсяDo not give up, you will manage it

Common mistakes

  • Я занимаюсь спорт каждый день
    Я занимаюсь спортом каждый день

    Заниматься takes instrumental case: спортом, not nominative спорт

  • Он тренировается с три часа
    Он тренируется три часа

    Duration without movement uses bare accusative: три часа, not с + genitive

  • Я хочу стать чемпион
    Я хочу стать чемпионом

    Стать (to become) takes instrumental case: чемпионом, not nominative чемпион

  • Она играет в теннис хорошо очень
    Она очень хорошо играет в теннис

    Adverbs like очень and хорошо go before the verb/adjective they modify, not at the end

  • Мы победили в соревнование
    Мы победили в соревновании

    В with location/event takes prepositional case: в соревновании, not accusative соревнование
