Telling a Story: Time Connectors
When narrating events in Russian, time connectors help sequence the story clearly.
Key sequence words
- сначала → first, at first
- потом / затем → then, next
- после этого → after that
- вдруг → suddenly
- наконец → finally
- в конце концов → in the end
Example story
«Сначала я встал и позавтракал. Потом я поехал в город. После этого мы встретились с другом. Вдруг пошёл дождь! В конце концов мы зашли в кафе.»
→ First I got up and had breakfast. Then I went to the city. After that we met a friend. Suddenly it started raining! In the end we went into a café.
Asking about a story
- Что случилось? → What happened?
- Расскажи мне! → Tell me!
- А потом что? → And then what?
- Правда?! → Really?!

- Сначала мы пошли в кино.Starting a story: first we went to the cinema
- Потом мы поели в ресторане.Continuing: then we ate at a restaurant
- Вдруг он позвонил!Adding a surprise: suddenly he called!
- В конце концов всё хорошо.Ending a story: in the end everything was fine
- А потом что?Asking what happened next
- Расскажи мне подробнее.Asking for more details
- Наконец мы вернулись домой.Saying you finally returned home
Common mistakes
Потом сначала мы пошли домойСначала мы пошли домой, потом...сначала (first) must come before потом (then). They cannot be swapped.
Вдруг он позвонитВдруг он позвонилWhen narrating past events, use past tense. позвонит is future tense.
Наконец мы возвращались домойНаконец мы вернулись домойFor a completed return use the perfective вернуться. возвращались is imperfective (ongoing action).
После этого случилось хорошоПосле этого всё прошло хорошослучилось means something happened (event). For things going well use прошло хорошо.
Сначала мы пошли в кино, сначала поелиСначала мы пошли в кино, потом поелиDo not repeat сначала. Use потом or затем for the next event.
Он решил внезапно позвонитьВдруг он позвонилвдруг (suddenly) describes unexpected events and goes at the start of a clause.
