Expressing Wants and Plans
-고 싶다 means "want to." Attach it to the verb stem:
- 일하다 → 일하고 싶어요 (I want to work)
- 배우다 → 배우고 싶어요 (I want to learn)
- 취직하다 → 취직하고 싶어요 (I want to get a job)
-(으)려고 하다 means "planning to" or "intending to":
- If stem ends in a consonant: add -으려고 해요
- 먹다 → 먹으려고 해요 (I plan to eat)
- If stem ends in a vowel: add -려고 해요
- 가다 → 가려고 해요 (I plan to go)
- 지원하다 → 지원하려고 해요 (I plan to apply)
Examples in job context:
- 마케팅 회사에 지원하고 싶어요. — I want to apply to a marketing company.
- 이력서를 준비하려고 해요. — I am planning to prepare my resume.

Common mistakes
저는 일하고 싶습니다 거기에저는 거기에서 일하고 싶어요Location with 에서 must be placed before the verb
이력서를 준비하으려고 해요이력서를 준비하려고 해요준비하다 ends in a vowel, so use -려고 해요, not -으려고 해요
취직하고 싶습니다 회사에회사에 취직하고 싶어요Destination 에 comes before the verb in Korean
먹으고 싶어요먹고 싶어요-고 싶다 attaches directly to stem; do not add 으
지원하려고 합니다 내일내일 지원하려고 해요Time word 내일 comes first; -려고 해요 is more natural than formal -려고 합니다
