Japanese 句読点 (punctuation) differs significantly from Western systems. The 句点 (。) and 読点 (、) are full-width characters placed differently than their Western counterparts. 鉤括弧「」serve as standard quotation marks, while 二重鉤括弧『』indicate titles of works or quotes within quotes. The 中黒 (・) separates foreign names (ジョン・スミス), listed items, or alternative readings. Japanese uses 三点リーダー (……) as paired sets of three dots, not the Western single ellipsis. In formal writing, 感嘆符 (!) and 疑問符 (?) are traditionally avoided — sentences end with 句点 regardless of tone. When used, they require a full-width space after them. 段落 (paragraph) formatting uses one-character indentation (字下げ). Vertical writing (縦書き) changes punctuation placement rules entirely. Understanding these conventions marks the difference between competent and truly polished Japanese writing.

Using a single dot for ellipsisUse paired 三点リーダー: ……(not ...)Japanese ellipsis uses two sets of three full-width dots; a single Western ... is incorrect
Overusing 感嘆符 and 疑問符 in formal writingIn formal text, express emotion through words, not punctuationTraditional Japanese writing conveys tone without ! or ?; formal documents should minimize their use
