Running a Meeting in Japanese
Leading meetings in Japanese requires mastery of keigo (honorific language). This lesson covers 尊敬語 (honorific) and 謙譲語 (humble) forms used in professional settings.
Honorific Forms: 尊敬語
- いただく — humble form of もらう: ご意見をいただけますか。 (Could we have your opinion?)
- くださる — honorific form of くれる: 部長がアドバイスをくださった。 (The manager gave us advice.)
Humble Forms: 謙譲語
- させていただく — humble request for permission: 次の議題に移らせていただきます。 (I will move to the next agenda item, with your permission.)
- 申し上げる — humble form of 言う: 一つ申し上げたいことがあります。 (I have one thing I would like to say.)
Meeting Phrases
- それでは始めさせていただきます。 — Let us begin.
- ここでまとめさせていただきます。 — Allow me to summarize here.
- ご質問はありますでしょうか。 — Are there any questions?
Expressions
- させていただきますHumble way to announce your action
- いただけますかPolite way to request something
- ご意見を伺うHumble way to ask for opinions
- 申し上げるHumble way to say something
- 次の議題に移るTo move to the next agenda item
- まとめさせていただくTo humbly summarize
Common mistakes
私がご説明くださいます。私がご説明いたします。くださる is honorific (for others). Use いたす (humble) for your own actions.
意見をいただきますか。ご意見をいただけますか。Use いただけますか (potential form) for polite requests, and add ご before 意見.
一つ言い上げたいことがある。一つ申し上げたいことがあります。The humble form is 申し上げる, not 言い上げる. Also use あります in formal context.
