The trapassato prossimo: advanced past narration
The trapassato prossimo (past perfect / pluperfect) expresses an action completed *before* another past action. It is essential for structuring a complex narrative in the past.
Formation
avere / essere in the imperfect + past participle
- *aveva fatto* → he/she had done
- *era andato/a* → he/she had gone
- *si era accorto/a* → he/she had realised
Contextualised examples
→ The protagonist did not know that his best friend had already read the manuscript.
→ When I opened the novel, I realised that the author had lived in that very city.
→ The final plot twist revealed what the reader had not guessed throughout the narration.
→ He had realised too late that the setting had a precise symbolic meaning.
Key point
The trapassato prossimo always appears in relation to a passato prossimo or an imperfetto. It never stands alone without this temporal context.

Two past actions require the trapassato for the earlier one. 'Non avevo capito' precedes reading the final chapter.
With 'essere' in the passive, the trapassato is 'era stato preso', not 'era preso', which would be the imperfect.
L'autore aveva scritto il romanzo in tre anni fa.L'autore aveva scritto il romanzo tre anni prima. With trapassato, use 'prima' (before) not 'fa' (ago), which is only used with the passato prossimo.
After 'rendersi conto di', use the past infinitive ('aver + past participle') rather than a direct subordinate clause with 'che'.
Piacere agrees with what is liked (il libro = singular): mi è piaciuto.
