The progressive: 正在 / 在 + verb
Use 正在 (zhèngzài) or 在 (zài) before a verb to show that an action is happening right now. You can also add 呢 (ne) at the end for emphasis.
- 我正在唱歌。(Wǒ zhèngzài chànggē.) — I am singing (right now).
- 他们在跳舞。(Tāmen zài tiàowǔ.) — They are dancing.
- 我们正在聊天呢。(Wǒmen zhèngzài liáotiān ne.) — We are chatting.
Party invitations Use these patterns to invite someone:
- 你来参加我的聚会吗？(Nǐ lái cānjiā wǒ de jùhuì ma?) — Will you come to my party?
- 周六晚上你有空吗？(Zhōuliù wǎnshang nǐ yǒu kòng ma?) — Are you free Saturday evening?
Expressions
- 你来参加我的聚会吗？Inviting someone to your party
- 我正在准备聚会。Saying you are preparing the party
- 干杯！Toasting at a party
- 玩得开心！Wishing someone fun
Common mistakes
我是在唱歌。我正在唱歌。Do not add 是 before 正在; it is not needed
他们正在跳舞了。他们正在跳舞。Do not use 了 with 正在; they express different things
我正在聚会准备。我正在准备聚会。Verb comes before object: 准备聚会
