Traps for Natives
Even native Spanish speakers make recurring errors:
- Dequeísmo and queísmo: adding *de* before *que* when not needed (*pienso de que* instead of *pienso que*), or omitting it when required (*me alegro que* instead of *me alegro de que*)
- Laísmo, leísmo, loísmo: confusion of object pronouns, especially in Castile (*la dije* instead of *le dije*)
- Gender of ambiguous nouns: *el calor* (not *la calor*), *el azúcar* (ambiguous gender, feminine accepted), *la sartén* (not *el sartén*)
- Notional agreement: matching the verb to meaning rather than grammar (*la mayoría piensan* instead of *la mayoría piensa*)
- Hypercorrection: over-correcting (*bacalado* instead of *bacalao*, by analogy with *-ado*)
- Common pleonasms: *subir arriba*, *bajar abajo*, *salir afuera* — redundancies even natives use
- Problematic accents: *solo/sólo*, *este/éste* — the RAE's newer norms cause confusion
